Why the Netherlands is limiting its livestock
The Netherlands is currently in the midst of trying to limit its number of livestock. It鈥檚 a controversial move, which will see potentially thousands of animals culled in order to reduce harmful nitrogen emissions by half by 2030 and protect biodiversity and vulnerable natural areas.
Tjeerd de Groot is a member of the house of representatives in the Netherlands and agriculture spokesman for coalition party D66, which has been seeking 鈥渞eal action鈥 on climate change in its last manifesto.
He told Newsday that the Netherlands is a small country with intensive production, and it has to drastically reduce its livestock. Land and labour is very expensive and the way money is earned has to change, with the processing industry and retail changing their earnings model to pay farmers better.
