Taliban women's work ban hampers winter weather relief
A Taliban official says freezing temperatures across Afghanistan have killed more than 120 people in what is the coldest winter in a decade. Several regions are cut off by snow and about 70,000 livestock have perished.
Relief operations have been hampered by a Taliban edict banning women from working with aid agencies. "Humanitarian aid cannot be delivered without women,鈥 says Martin Griffiths, head of the United Nations aid organisation.
He鈥檚 right, according to Neil Turner, the Norwegian Refugee Council country director in Kabul, who told Newsday its projects are on pause now, as the weather worsens.
鈥淲e鈥檙e having another very tough winter in Afghanistan, and what we need to do is restart our operations - and we are willing - but our women are essential.鈥
