Tyre Nichols: Call for US police reform legislation
The attorney representing the family of Tyre Nichols, the black man who was fatally beaten by five Memphis police officers, who were also also black, has called for the US Congress to pass police reform legislation, and said Mr Nichols' mother RowVaughn Wells hoped the tragedy could lead to a "greater good."
Speaking to Newsday, Ben Crump said the crime is appalling and deplorable but it demonstrates there is a problem with institutionalised police culture that is "biased against black and brown people in America".
He describes it as a systemic problem in the police in the US and says: "It's absolutely about race. It doesn't matter if the police are black, white or hispanic. The culture is that they somehow feel empowered to trample on the constitutional rights... of minorities."
