Managing diabetes while fasting during Ramadan

Dr Hilda Nabiswa, who specialises in diabetes care in Kenya, says people with diabetes who observe Ramadan, can take part in fasting despite their medical condition. But she stresses that the health risks will vary for each individual so it is important to have a pre-Ramadan assessment. During the holy month of Ramadan, observers are required to fast every day from dawn to sunset, and that could have an adverse effect on those who have to monitor their blood-sugar levels. Among her tips on managing diabetes during fasting, is to keep hydrated, and to break the fast, regardless of the time, if feeling unwell.
