'If you had a stillbirth - the woman never saw the baby'
Agnes Nisbett was the first black nursing officer in Leicester, and was also the founder of the ‘Born Whilst Sleeping‘ programme at Leicester's Royal Infirmary, a dedicated comfort room and support service for women who had stillbirths.
The idea for this room - which still exists today at the LRI - came from Agnes after her own experience of stillbirth in 1973.
Agnes tells Aminata Kamara how her son was immediately taken from her and not told what had happened to him. But how, 22 years later, she received a letter with details of where her son was buried, a moment that brought her so much relief.
