“I submitted my five day old baby for a medical trialâ€
After having a miscarriage, then a rough pregnancy, and knowing someone whose son had spinal muscular atrophy, Grace Johnston from Lewknor was keen for her five day old daughter to take part in a screening study for SMA at Oxford's John Radclfife Hospital. The study involves testing for SMA in the blood that is already taken as part of a routine test offered to all newborns in the UK to screen for other conditions. She's now encouraging other new parents to take part in trials to help research into the disease.
