Uganda: Man could face death penalty for 'aggravated homosexuality'
A man in Uganda is facing the death penalty after being charged with "aggravated homosexuality". The country has among the harshest anti-LGBTQ+ laws in the world, and anyone convicted of engaging in homosexual acts faces life imprisonment.
According to the charge sheet, her client is accused of unlawful sexual intercourse with a 41-year-old man, who is living with a physical disability. "Aggravated homosexuality" can involve sex with children or vulnerable people.
His lawyer is Justine Balya. She told Newsday that having the law on the books was always a cause for concern, but this first charge outlines the severity of the new offence.
