Hostage and crisis negotiator Nicky Perfect joined Nuala McGovern on Â鶹Éç Radio 4's Woman's Hour to talk about her work with the elite New Scotland Yard Hostage and Crisis Negotiation Unit.

Nicky has spent much of her life in highly fraught and dangerous situations. She’s brought people safely down from roof-top stand-offs, negotiated in gang kidnappings and terrorist incidents, and experienced the devastating moments when things don’t go according to plan.

She told Nuala about the demands of the role, what makes a good negotiator, and the four stages of listening, which features in her new book, Crisis: True stories of my life as a hostage negotiator.
