Between 1956 and 1959, Roy Davenport was a serving member of HM Armed Forces and participated in the British Nuclear testing programme while stationed on Christmas Island.

Roy who has been diagnosed with skin cancer, is one of the 40,000 veterans and British personnel who took part in the tests. Of those, only 2,000 are thought to still be alive and many believe they have suffered ill health due to their participation.

To recognise their service, the Government has announced they will be awarded a new medal, but there are fears it may not be awarded before Roy loses his battle with cancer.

Roy told Conor O'Grady why he campaigned so long for the medal.
