The World Health Organization estimates that antibiotic resistance is linked to the deaths of five million people a year. Some bacterial infections are getting tougher and tougher to treat with the antibiotics currently in use.

But there's a glimmer of hope. Scientists in the US believe they've developed a drug that acts in a new way to target one of the three bacteria that are considered to pose the greatest threat because of their resistance.

Newshour's James Menendez speaks to Dr Michael Lobritz, global head of infectious diseases at Roche and a co-author of the research.
