‘There are people who phone just to abuse us’
Call handlers for Thames Valley Police received 404,000 emergency 999 calls in the past year, an increase of nine per cent on the year before.
In addition to the high number of calls, dispatchers also have to contend with callers who waste time or verbally abuse them.
It's hoped a new messaging service will reduce the pressure on police phone lines, making things easier for both call handlers and victims of crime.
