An Oxfordshire based AI start-up has secured a 拢1 million contract with the Ministry of Defence to develop an intelligent robot that can replace people as the first point of contact in a hazardous incident, such as a chemical or biological incident.

The robot鈥檚 main purpose is to assist the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with environmental remediation and recovery following chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents in the UK. It鈥檚 due for its first customer evaluation in September.

Oxford Dynamics, based at Harwell Campus, have been tasked with developing the robot, using the range of terrains on the campus to assess its performance on grass, concrete, gravel, steps and slopes. The aim is for the robot to operate without a human needed in the line of sight in unknown terrain.
