One of the last remaining slam door trains to serve Clacton-on-Sea has moved to a new permanent home. Known as the 'Clacton Express', the Class 309 was the first one capable of reaching 100mph. The British Rail units were in service between the 1960s and 1980s on the Liverpool Street line which stopped at a number of Essex towns, including Frinton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze.

The train is now being fully restored at the East Anglian Railway Museum near Colchester.

Brad Wright setup the Clacton Express Preservation Group in 2021, and has been fundraising to restore the train.
