Hunt for family of Yorkshire pilot killed in 1945
Pupils from Foyle College in Northern Ireland are seeking help to trace any living relatives of a Yorkshire pilot who was sadly killed in a 1945 crash in the Sperrin Mountains in the NW of Northern Ireland. The Pilot was Petty Officer Douglas David Smith. He was born on 20th November 1923 and the son of David and Hannah Jessica Smith of Exley Head, Yorkshire. He was flying a Hellcat aircraft and crashed into the summit of Sawel – the highest peak in the Sperrin Mountains in the NW of Northern Ireland, on 6th August 1945. He is buried in Grave 20 Commonwealth War Graves section St Canices Church in Eglinton, Northern Ireland.
