Eighteen and a half years after Madeleine McCann went missing from southern Portugal, her father Gerry is calling for greater press scrutiny, and has sent a letter to the prime minister asking for a meeting.

Speaking to Today's Amol Rajan in an exclusive interview, Mr McCann said his family was subjected to "monstering" by sections of the press, and how "distressing" it was for him and his family.

Other signatories to the letter, organised by the campaign group Hacked Off, include Margaret Aspinall, who represents the Hillsborough victims and introduced Keir Starmer at this year's Labour party conference.

Mr McCann also spoke about why he is not giving up hope for finding Madeleine and how the recent conviction of Julia Wandelt for harrassing the family had reopened old wounds.
