For nearly 50 years drivers have attempted to navigate the Paris to Dakar rally, an off-road endurance event over all types of terrain from tarmac to gravel to sand.

You can take part in a car or on a motor bike, but if you do not have the right skills and support team around you then you can find yourself lost in the Sahara desert.

In 2001 German Jutta Kleinschmidt became the first, and still the only woman to win the event.
