'It looks like a bomb's gone off' - The giant hole in a canal
A major incident has been declared at the the Llangollen Canal in Whitchurch where a giant hole emerged, leaving boats stricken in the cavity or teetering on the edge of the drop. Whitchurch councillor Sho Abdul said the scene looked "absolutely insane", people's lives had been impacted, homes damaged, and it was really sad given the time of year, he added.
Mark Durham, the Canal and River Trust's principal engineer, said the most accurate term to describe what had happened was "embankment failure".
