Guide to Life: The Declutter You Won't Want to Avoid
Simple steps to declutter without guilt, pressure or perfectionism.
As spring cleaning season arrives, many of us turn to the cupboards, drawers and overstuffed corners we鈥檇 rather avoid 鈥 and with them, the private battle so many of us have with clutter.
Not the glossy fantasy of a minimalist 鈥渟how home鈥, but the real emotional weight of living with too much stuff, feeling overwhelmed by it, and wondering why letting go feels so hard.
In this episode of The Woman鈥檚 Hour Guide to Life, we explore why clutter affects us far more than we realise 鈥 from guilt and shame to decision fatigue, comfort, identity and attachment 鈥 and why tackling it isn鈥檛 simply a matter of willpower. We鈥檒l show you how to start small, take the pressure off, and build a space that supports you rather than someone else鈥檚 idea of perfection.
Journalist Anita Chaudhuri describes life inside what she calls a 鈥渞iot of colour鈥: shelves of books, notebooks, hobby kits and sentimental objects that feel both comforting and overwhelming. She tells Nuala McGovern how clutter affects her confidence and the way she moves through her day.
They鈥檙e joined by professional organiser Vicky Silverthorne and psychologist Linda Blair, who share practical advice, including:
- Why clutter can feel so emotionally loaded
- How to start without trying to clear the whole house at once
- Ways to let go of things without guilt or perfectionism
- Why storage comes after decluttering, not before
- How to donate, recycle or rehome items in manageable ways
We also explore why clutter isn't automatically 鈥渂ad鈥, why creativity and tidiness aren鈥檛 opposites, and how to make your space work for you 鈥 not for social media.
Please note: This discussion is not about hoarding disorder, which is a recognised mental health condition where someone acquires or keeps large numbers of items even when this seriously affects daily life. If you or someone you know is struggling in that way, the NHS recommends speaking to your GP, because support is available.
