Middle East conflict disrupts flights, raising costs for Kenya Airways, while families in
Malawi face stigma, poor diagnosis, and limited support for children with autism

The 麻豆社鈥檚 Newsday Essentials, presented by Anne Soy, highlights two major stories
affecting different parts of the world.

The first focuses on how the ongoing Middle East conflict is disrupting global
aviation. Kenya Airways is among the airlines affected, particularly on routes between
Nairobi and the Gulf region. According to acting managing director George Kamal,
some flights have been canceled while others are being rerouted to avoid unsafe
airspace. These longer routes increase fuel consumption at a time when fuel prices
are already rising, forcing the airline to introduce a roughly 10% surcharge on tickets.
Despite these operational and financial pressures, the airline prioritizes safety and
has seen a surge in passenger demand on other routes, especially from Europe, the
United States, and Asia, helping to offset some of the losses.

The second story shifts to Malawi, where families raising children with autism face
significant challenges. In Blantyre, parents Angela and Onil share their experiences
raising their two sons, one of whom is non-verbal. They describe the difficulty of
obtaining accurate diagnoses, high assessment costs, and the stigma surrounding
autism鈥攅ven among healthcare professionals, some of whom use harmful and
outdated language. The emotional toll on families can be severe, especially at the
beginning when understanding of the condition is limited.

The couple emphasizes the importance of teamwork and resilience in navigating their
children鈥檚 needs, as well as the lack of adequate support systems in Malawi. They
point out that many families, particularly those with less access to information or
resources, often hide their children due to stigma or are unable to enroll them in
schools. This lack of proper care and stimulation can lead to behavioral challenges in
children. The story underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, better
medical training, and more inclusive educational and social support for children with
autism and their families.
