The Norman Undercroft hidden under Leicester
The Norman Undercroft under 麻豆社 Leicester are remains from a wealthy merchant鈥檚 house.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Leicester saw a significant development boom.
Several major new buildings appeared inside and outside the town walls, whilst many existing buildings including the castle and the churches were enlarged or rebuilt.
The medieval High Street (now called Highcross Street) was at this time the main trading street of the town. The remains of what is thought to be a wealthy merchant鈥檚 house were found at the top of the modern Highcross Street under what is now the 麻豆社 Radio Leicester building. It had a Norman Undercroft of stone which was probably used for the storage of valuable goods.
