Newsday Essentials

In this week鈥檚 episode of Newsday Essentials we look at the Ebola outbreak in the
Democratic Republic of Congo, where fear, mistrust and pressure on the health system
are forcing many patients to turn first to traditional healers when illness strikes.

In this edition of Newsday Essentials, we focus on the Ebola outbreak in the
Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda where suspected cases have surpassed
1,000 and deaths continue to rise.
In the DRC鈥檚 Ituri province, many families still rely on traditional healers as their first
point of contact when illness strikes, with some avoiding hospitals out of fear, mistrust
or lack of access to healthcare.
Meanwhile, Uganda has closed its border with the DRC against World Health
Organization recommendations, reflecting growing concern over the spread of Ebola
across East Africa.
