Residents in Parson Cross say Tongue Gutter has become polluted with sanitary towels, baby wipes and other waste.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said:

鈥淔ollowing the heavy rainfall on Friday 26 June the Deerlands CSO discharged and the screen operated as it should by stopping wet wipes and other detritus from going into the water course.

鈥淲hilst the screen is doing its job, it can look untidy and our operational teams were on site later in the day to remove any residue. We鈥檒l be keeping a close eye on it during future heavy rain spells to keep it as clean as possible.

鈥淐ombined storm overflows (CSO) operate as a relief valve during periods of heavy rain to stop wastewater backing up into homes and gardens.

鈥淵orkshire Water is investing 拢1.5bn over the next five years to improve its network of CSO and improve storage capacity to stop discharges going into local water courses.
