DRC: 24 people accused of Laurent Kabila assassination pardoned

Reports and analysis of the day's political, economic and sports news from across Africa.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, 24 people who had been accused of killing former president Laurent Kabila in 2001 have been pardoned and freed from jail by president Felix Tshisekedi. Rights groups had long criticised the military trial which led to their convictions.

We get an update from Uganda, where presidential elections are happening next week. The campaign has been marred by violent incidents, and the authorities are also warning people not to congregate at polling stations, after voting, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

And our Resident Presidents are talking about the chaotic scenes witnessed this week in Washington DC, with supporters of President Donald Trump storming the US Capitol.
