Grieg’s Peer Gynt is one of Norway’s best known scores but it is usually performed in the form of concert suites which the composer compiled from his music for Ibsen’s play of the same name. A hundred and fifty years on from the play’s first publication, Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen makes her Proms debut in excerpts from Grieg’s music for the stage version of Peer Gynt. Alban Gerhardt is the soloist for Schumann’s Cello Concerto which rejects overt solo virtuosity in favour of a dialogue between cello and orchestra.
