Surviving gay conversion therapy
Garrard Conley grew up in a fundamentalist Christian family and was sent to a gay conversion camp in a bid to rid himself of homosexuality.
Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian family in America鈥檚 Bible Belt, Garrard Conley had doubts about his sexuality but had to hide it from his community and family, especially his father who was a pastor. When Garrard was at university, he was outed, and his parents felt they had no choice but to send him to a gay conversion therapy camp in a bid to 鈥榗ure鈥 him of homosexuality. Garrard was soon desperate to leave. Help would come from an unlikely place. (A longer version of this interview was first broadcast in June 2018)
