The rocket that revived Brazil鈥檚 space programme

On 23 October 2004, Brazil launched its first rocket, following an explosion which killed 21 people. Just fourteen months after the tragedy the space programme was back on track.

In 2003, 21 people died when a space rocket exploded at Brazil鈥檚 Alcantara Launch Centre, three days before its planned flight.

It was the country鈥檚 third 鈥 and most serious - rocket failure in six years.

But despite the setback, just 14 months later, Brazil revived its space ambitions by successfully launching its first rocket since the tragedy.

Jacqueline Paine spoke to engineer Felix Palmerio, who spent decades working on a special project to develop a space rocket in Brazil, and who watched the launch.
