Nigeria's epidemic of school kidnappings
A spate of mass abductions terrifies parents and pupils in Nigeria; witness to an execution in Oklahoma; Kazakhstan's economic boom times; crossing the Black Sea on a cargo ferry
Nigeria's president, Bola Tinubu, has declared a nationwide security emergency after a spate of mass of kidnappings from schools across the the country鈥檚 north and central belt. Who's behind these abductions, what do they want - and what's being done to get the children back? Mayeni Jones reports from Minna, in Niger state.
Donald Trump moved fast to repeal the Biden administration's moratorium on federal executions in the United States. Just over half of Americans say they support the use of the death penalty for convicted murderers. Since the beginning of this year, more than 40 prisoners have been put to death. Hilary Andersson was recently selected to be a media witness for an execution in Oklahoma.
Kazakhstan, the largest and richest of the "five stans" which were formerly constituent parts of the USSR, has been forging its own political and economic path since independence. It's on good trade terms with the USA, Russia and China - and on something of a building spree. Tim Hartley recently revisited the country for the first time in more than 20 years, and found it keen to keep going forward.
Plenty of tourists flock to the shores of the Black Sea for sunshine, fun at its beach resorts, or its cities' ancient heritage. But Caroline Eden wanted to see a different side, and have a proper adventure - so she recently crossed the Sea on a cargo ferry, in the company of traders and truckers from many nations (as well as a small herd of live cattle)
