Why I still love sharks even after one nearly killed me
Mexican marine biologist Mauricio Hoyos was 40 metres under water tagging sharks when one of them turned on him and bit his head. But he continues to be their chief defender
In September last year Mauricio Hoyos, a marine biologist and shark expert, was working in the waters off Costa Rica, doing a job he had done for years - tagging sharks. He'd just placed a transmitter on the left side of the dorsal fin of a 3m long Galapagos shark and was writing down some notes when intuition told him to look up. That was when he saw a huge mouth coming towards him, at speed. Mauricio was bitten in the head. With his mask broken and blood flowing he couldn't see where he was going, the hose to his oxygen tank had been severed, he was 40m under water facing decompression sickness if he raced to the surface, his chances of survival were slim.
US figure skater Ilia Malinin made headlines when he performed a backflip at this year's Winter Olympics, it was a move that had, until recently, been banned. The last time a figure skater pulled off a backflip on the ice was at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan. The skater was France's Surya Bonaly. Surya had sustained an injury meaning she couldn't complete her rehearsed routine. Instead, she improvised. In her prime, Surya's technical skill was unmatched. But despite her great talent, an Olympic gold medal always eluded her. Although judges were unimpressed on the day, the crowd were in awe. Surya's signature backflip became so famous she says it is now known as 'the Bonaly'. Surya and her now husband Peter Biver spoke to Emily Webb in 2019.
