Outlook Mixtape: Bedtime Stories
The legend of a magic river in Peru, an Indian grandmother鈥檚 folktales, Icelandic lullabies and the origins of a children鈥檚 classic about a family of rabbits.
Andr茅s Ruzo is a geothermal scientist who grew up in the United States, the son of Peruvian and Nicaraguan parents. When he used to visit Peru as a boy, his grandfather would tell him ancient legends of mythical places. Little did he know one of those stories would come to life in a very real way.
There's a grandmother in Bangalore who loves telling Indian folktales, she has an audience of thousands of kids from all around the world. Her name is Sarla Minni, though she's known to her followers as Kahaniwali Nani, the Hindi for storytelling granny.
When Icelandic singer Hafd铆s Huld was expecting her first child she and husband Alisdair retreated to their loft in the Icelandic countryside and started to craft music for their unborn baby. The result was an album of lullabies called V枚gguv铆sur, it became the most-streamed in Icelandic history.
In a corner of a grocery store in Istanbul there is a sanctuary for bookworms. Shopkeeper Kanber Bozan has transformed the lives of local children by turning a section of his shop into a library. Selin Girit visited "Uncle Kanber's" store.
In the 1960s English civil servant Richard Adams drove his daughters Juliet and Rosamond to school and told them a story to pass the time. The tale was about rabbits trying to find a new place to live after developers move onto their field, and it became the best-selling children's classic Watership Down. Juliet and Rosamond tell us about the novel that changed their family's lives.
