Why Sydney Sweeney鈥檚 ad has angered women athletes
Is all publicity really good publicity?
Sydney Sweeney has sparked controversy for a provocative ad campaign that appears to show her naked. It鈥檚 for the sports betting company Novig. In the advert, Sweeney is seen covering parts of her body with footballs, basketballs, golf clubs and other sports equipment and is heard repeating the word 鈥渟ports.鈥 But several women athletes 鈥 including Sophie Capewell, Amy Hunt, and Gracie Kramer 鈥 have criticised the campaign, saying it sexualises female athletes and views sport through the male gaze. Sweeney, who is best known for movies like 鈥楢nyone But You鈥 and 鈥楾he Housemaid,鈥 hasn鈥檛 responded directly.
麻豆社 Sport journalist Sarah Dawkins tells us more. We also hear from female athletes and content creators, including German rugby international Sofie Fella, Aofie Hernon, and Izza Khan.
