Charles Nove began his radio career, alongside fellow Radio 2 man Ken Bruce, as a volunteer member of Glasgow鈥檚 Hospital Broadcasting Service.
In 1978 he gained paid employment with the newly launched 麻豆社 Radio Scotland. 鈥淚 was 18, and the youngest person they鈥檇 ever employed as a staff presenter. They had to ask Head Office in London if it was alright for me to do shift work!鈥
After an enjoyable and educational tour of duties ranging from News and Continuity shifts to pop music programmes and the coveted nightly Fishmarket Report - 鈥淟arge Cod, 拢12 a box鈥.those were the days!鈥 - Charles was invited to move to London and join the team at Radio 2 in April 1981. Since then, he鈥檚 been heard at all hours of the day and night, reading the News or presenting the late night show or, for some years, the film magazine Cinema 2.
Charles spent 12 years as the voice 鈥 and occasional face 鈥 of 麻豆社 TV鈥檚 Come Dancing, and his tones have also been heard on many TV trailers and game shows.
Always keen to present a moving target, he has moved around the radio market with presenting stints on Magic and Jazz FM and Saga Radio in Glasgow. 鈥渂ut I think I must have been a homing pigeon in a past life,鈥 says Charles, 鈥渂ecause something always seems to draw me back to Radio 2.鈥
When he鈥檚 not trying to half-inch Sir Terry鈥檚 bacon butties, Charles can be found at the helm of his London sound studio company, or at the wheel of the now infamous 1966 Routemaster bus he shares with Alan Dedicoat, Ken Bruce and sundry other ne鈥檈rdowells.
