Listener Andrew Brocks has an intriguing story about a single shoe by the roadside. He discovered a stone, which stands in the moors a few miles east of Macclesfield, bearing an inscription commemorating the death of a walker in 1755. The inscription reads

"Here John Turner was cast away in a heavy snow storm in the night in or about the year 1755".

The reverse side continues mysteriously

"The print of a woman's shoe was found by his side in the snow were (sic) he lay dead. H."

Was this the earliest record of a single shoe by the roadside? Who was H? If you feel moved to investigate yourself, the grid reference is 978760 and you can find it on the OS Pathfinder map 759.
