'A' Terry Level

Terry Tyacke's just passed his 29th 'A' level. That'll give the grandchildren something to aim for...

When Terry left school he took the entrance exam for the local dockyard and got a place as a shipwright, but formal education had 'passed him by'.

He left the Royal Navy in 1970 and the family moved to Trowbridge. Trowbridge College was just up the road, and attempting to enthuse his daughter, he suggested that the whole family enrol in classes. His daughter got enough to get into the Civil Service, and Terry ended up with 14 'O' levels.

A natural progression was to move on to 'A' levels. He has 29, the latest is one in Social Policy from Bath.

Other courses have included Business Studies, Psychology, Law, Pure and Applied Maths, Stats, English, Biology...Physical Education was one that he had a lot of fun on. He took it in 1996 - his 70th year. Realising he wasn't going to shine in the practical, (he had to throw the javelin and run the 100 meters) his final mark of 'D' was something of a triumph.

For next year, Terry is going to see what's running. He'd like History of Art to be his 30th 'A' level, after which he may call it a day.
