Changing Faces

Alison felt betrayed and rejected when she found out about her husband Miles’ affair. They both decided that to save their marriage, some radical changes were necessary...

Alison met Miles at school and he was her first love.

Once they were married they decided to escape from the London rat race and move to Wales. But because Alison is a school teacher she had to stay on in London, whilst Miles went to Wales to start his new job as a paramedic.

It was whilst working in Wales that Miles started to have an affair. Alison had no idea what was happening. "The only thing that was hard for me was that Miles had started this new life and was really happy and I was just killing time".

It wasn’t until Alison had moved to Wales that she realised things weren’t right between them. But still Miles didn’t admit that there was anyone else. The truth emerged when Alison went through Miles’ wallet and found a train ticket. "I’d put him on the train on Sunday, but there was a train ticket for Monday morning". Alison was "pretty gobsmacked". They decided not to tell their children (now aged 6 and 9) and never spoke of it again. Alison assumed it was all over.

The affair was over, but Miles still wasn’t happy. "I’d become a completely different person and I couldn’t go back to my old life". It was at this point that they both changed their appearance dramatically. The changes to Alison were the most drastic. She cut her hair and gave her wardrobe a complete overhaul.

But their physical transformations reflected a more significant change in their relationship. "For the first time in our lives", says Alison, "we can say absolutely anything to each other".

Miles thinks Alison's transformation is fantastic. He admits to being a forceful character and that Alison lived for a long time in his shadow. But now, he says, "she’s a person in her own right".
