French Onion Mystery

John McKay phoned Home Truths to share a thought which has been bothering him for years and years...

I was brought up in the very far north east of Scotland, north of Inverness. I remember as a boy - I thought it was a trick of my imagination - but my mother has confirmed this, that Frenchmen, wearing berets used to cycle around with onions hanging from their bicyles, selling them door to door.

I often wondered how they went about this and how the operation worked. Did they come over in a boat with a load of Frenchmen, and then set off from the boat on bicycles or a big lorry. I mean, Kent I can understand, but the north east of Scotland?

Any answers?
