Why the typical girl offender is a shoplifter?

The stereotype of the teenage girl offender is that of a shoplifter – and it’s true that if a teenage girl does commit a crime, shoplifting is the most likely. It’s almost seen as a rite of passage. What happens to girls when they do shoplift and are caught – which is increasingly likely in an age of CCTV? She is joined by Dr Fiona Measham, lecturer in criminology at Lancaster University and Mike Thomas, Chair of the Association of Youth Offending Team Managers.
