Equal pay – Framework for a Fairer Future 01 July 2008
How will the Government’s proposals work in practice to ensure women achieve equal pay?

Women are paid on average 12.6% less per hour than men and as a result of the pay gap, the average woman is estimated to lose £300,000 over her lifetime. Last week, Harriet Harman, the Minister for Women and Equality, set out the main themes of the Government’s Equality Bill. These include banning gagging clauses so that work colleagues can compare wages and looking at the effectiveness of equal pay audits. So do these proposals go far enoughÌýand how have measures to cut the pay gap been implemented in other countries? Jenni discusses these issues with Solicitor General Vera Baird QC MP, Sarah Campbell, Policy Officer at the Fawcett Society, and with Olle Brynja, Research Officer at The Equal Opportunities Ombudsman in Sweden.
