Are we getting closer to havingwomen bishops?
This week the General Synod will be votingin the next stage of the process that could result in the ordination of women bishops in the Church of England. The Church voted to allow women priests in 1992, but currently the law prevents them from becoming bishops – the so-called ‘stained-glass ceiling’. Now,a draft law is to be discussed which could provide for male "complementary" bishops to look after parishes unwilling to accept a woman.
Christina Rees, Chair of Watch (Women and the Church), and The Reverend Jane Hedges, Canon of Westminster, join Jane to discuss the implications of a yes or no vote for the “super bishops,” as they have been nicknamed by the press.
