Gracie Fields 20 Jun 2006
As the world goes into football frenzy, song writers and stars have been teaming up to give us new football anthems for fans to thrill to even before the kick off. But where did the tradition for football anthems begin? Thanks to a timely discovery in a local archive, Gracie Fields, the comic diva from Rochdale , can lay claim to recording the very first football anthem, back in 1931.

'Our Gracie', as she was affectionately known was a self-confessed football fan, who is on record as saying that as a girl she used to go every Saturday with her father to watch Rochdale.ÌýÌýBut as the song, with its catchy title 'Pass, Shoot, Goal', has come to light, it's stirred up something of a controversy in and around Rochdale.Ìý On the recording, Gracie can clearly be heard shouting 'Come on Oldham !'
