It was once taken for granted that if a woman was not wealthy herself, she should try to find a man of means – hence any number of fairy-tales involving Princes. And let’s face it, not only is Mr Darcy a thoroughly decent man in Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’, he also happens to own the rather impressive Pemberley. But today you are likely to get labelled a gold-digger, if you are candid about casting an eye over the estate of an eligible man. The papers have been full of stories about “toxic wives” leaving their hedge-funded husbands now they’ve lost fortunes in the credit crunch. Is it a myth, or an uncomfortable truth that women’s currency is still often youth and beauty, and men’s is money?
