Frozen Swimmers at Hampstead Ponds
Swimming in the open air, in natural surroundings on a warm day can be a joy

But how about dunking yourself in a freezing lake at this time of year?

Scores of brave people turn up every single morning, come rain or shine, with their towels and swimming costumes to London's Hampstead Ponds, a series of natural lakes on Hampstead Heath.Ìý

People have been swimming in the ponds for more than 100 years, and last week pond swimmers successfully campaigned to be able to swim in the mixed ponds without lifeguards.Ìý

Liz Pearson went off to the women's pond with regular swimmer Margaret, 83, to see for herself what it is that draws in swimmers in all weathers.
