Today it is a field, but in 1689 this was the site of the mansion of the Duke of Atholl. The Cameronians, a small regiment of soldiers allied to the government army, were stationed here. And massed on the hills around them, the opposing Jacobite forces prepared for battle.

The fighting took place across the whole town of Dunkeld - including in and around the cathedral grounds. If you look closely at the wall of the east gable of the cathedral you can see marks - which are said to be impacts from the musket balls used in the battle.

The Cameronian's commander William Cleland was killed in the battle. This small stone marks his grave.

There is some mysterious graffiti on this stone mounted in the cathedral tower. Could it have dated from the battle?

During the battle, Jacobite soldiers hid in the houses of the town and fired from inside. The Cameronians' response was to burn all the buildings - this house was one of only three left standing.
