Why are my subtitles blocking programme information and names?

In pre-recorded programmes where there are names or extra programme information that appear at the bottom of the screen, subtitles are placed in the lower third of the screen to avoid obscuring this.

With programmes with live content, such as News or Panorama, it is not known in advance if extra information will be displayed. With this in mind, subtitles are placed similarly as a precaution.

For sport, the subtitles are normally placed in the top left half of the screen in order to avoid blocking any sporting action. On some televisions this can block the score graphic. The �鶹�� has no control over this.

For those pre-recorded programmes where the subtitles are pre-prepared and pre-delivered, the default position is to place the subtitles at the bottom of the screen. We wouldn’t normally place subtitles in the middle of the screen for this type of content, unless there was a good reason to do so, i.e. a documentary may have someone talking with a name underneath, in which case we’d time the subtitles to briefly move up to avoid the name appearing and place subsequent subtitles at the bottom of the screen once the name disappeared. Or, as an example, if some significant plot action was happening in the lower part of the screen, we would endeavour to ensure this was not obscured by subtitles.

The �鶹�� have very clear guidelines on where to position subtitles; we are very aware of the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing subtitle users and the importance of not covering up a speaker’s mouth or facial expressions.

Why does my external audio amplifier go silent when watching some programmes on a �鶹�� HD channel?

Most programmes on the �鶹�� are transmitted in stereo, however some HD programmes are transmitted in Dolby Digital 5.1. For viewers who only have a stereo setup, your receiver will convert (or downmix) the Dolby Digital 5.1 transmission to stereo. The �鶹�� does not broadcast two separate soundtracks.

If your stereo amplifier goes silent when Dolby Digital 5.1 programmes are broadcast, it is possible that the amplifier does not understand the Dolby Digital 5.1 transmission received. We suggest you try changing the television/set-top box output in the settings to PCM Stereo.

How can storms affect my reception?

Storms may affect your reception by moving or damaging your aerial system or cause problems with the transmitter, including problems with the electricity supply.

What to try if you’ve lost reception due to a storm

Check whether there is a problem with your local transmitter. Use our transmitter checker tool to do this. If there is a known problem with the transmitter, you'll need to wait until it has been fixed. As an interim measure, consider using �鶹�� iPlayer or �鶹�� Sounds if possible. And if you tried retuning when there is a transmitter problem, you may have to do this again once the transmitter problem has been fixed.

Checking with a neighbour is also hhttps://getmeviewing org ukelpful. If they do have a problem it indicates a transmitter problem. If they don’t then this indicates a problem with your aerial system and you should consider getting it professionally checked.

We cannot recommend individual Installers. However, GetMeViewing is the consumer site for CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries), which is a recognised trade body that will be able to put you in touch with one of its members in your area.

Why do I see duplicate channels in my Freeview Play EPG?

On 7 June 2023 we were able to put �鶹�� One HD and �鶹�� Two HD in prime slots 1 and 2 for newer Freeview Play televisions when connected to the internet (we refer to these below as ‘qualifying TVs’).

Previously, �鶹�� One HD and �鶹�� Two HD were listed at slots 101 and 102 and, for most devices, that existing listing will continue to be duplicated (�鶹�� One HD would be at slot 1 and 101, etc.)

For qualifying TVs, the standard definition versions of �鶹�� One and �鶹�� Two will be listed in 611 and 612 respectively.

Below is a list of television brands (and release years) for qualifying TVs which can process the swapping when the TV is connected to the internet.

To check if your TV is qualifying, please go to channel 100 (the ‘Freeview Explore’ service) on your Freeview Play device and select “Get Help" from the "Help and Settings" section. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, you will see a collection of numbers and letters which are the ‘Freeview Play platform ID’ – if that ID appears in the list above, then your TV should be able to process the swapping when connected to the internet.

It is worth noting that If you disconnect your TV from the internet, the enhanced channel listing will be lost and the listing will revert to �鶹�� One and �鶹�� Two in SD at the top of the EPG.

Is the RadioTeleswitching System (RTS) being turned off?

The �鶹�� do not own the Radio Teleswitching System (RTS), we simply deliver the signal using our transmitter on behalf of the Energy Networks Association (ENA). The �鶹�� has a long-standing relationship with the ENA to transmit Radio Tele-switching data on 198kHz alongside the �鶹�� Radio 4 Longwave signal.

Energy regulator Ofgem has set binding annual installation targets for electricity suppliers to roll out smart and advanced meters to their remaining non-smart customers. Radio Teleswitch is being replaced as part of the smart meter rollout programme and to enable the programme to continue, the life of the Radio Teleswitching system has been extended through to June 2025.

What is Radio Teleswitching (RTS)?

Energy suppliers use the Radio Teleswitching System to switch electricity meters between different tariff rates at different times of the day. For example, this could be to send start and stop times to Economy 7, Economy 10, and storage heaters.
