I loved school at Braehead Primary, Ayr, in the 60s when I was 9.
The teachers were fair. We had to learn poetry and the Ten commandments off by heart - a good beginning. The Headmaster Mr John Nimmo was very proud of his pupils.
The Primary 7 teacher Miss Hart was great and kind and gave us confidence although we missed her terribly when we left. We had to leave early for transition before the secondary school.
I wasn't good at arithmatic, but i loved writing stories and reading and Art .. and still do today. I loved history and art. We used to get a small bottle of milk at playtime. The school had a great playing field and the school was so bright and cheery.
You could smell the fresh paint, when we returned from holidays...
I remember when we first had to wear florescent arm bands, as the clocks were put back and it was really dark early in the morning....
When i went to Ayr Academy, it had a great atmosphere - of History.
I remember seeing the History of Ayr on film made by some of the teachers in Ayr, some of our teachers were on it too. It was very interesting and educational. I loved history -
Mrs Gibson was very good at explaining it and made it exciting, and I was in the class to do history O-level but sadly went to another school in 4th year for prenursing class and
they did modern studies so we never got history lessons. Again, I missed history.
Now live in twickenham but when i visit my ,mother nd relatives, I always look at my old schools and the various historic places in ayr. What an education...
sheila jean cowan was my maiden name though I got called jean or jeannie more.
