Episode 42: A Trip to Hindustan

In
this week's programme John Purser is joined by pianist Ronald Brautigam and singer Prakriti Dutta to explore Erik Chisholm’s remarkable Hindustani piano concerto. The piece was inspired by the music Chisholm heard while on a wartime posting with ENSA, and incorporates aspects of Indian classical music, a very radical world music experiment for the 1940s.
The programme includes extracts from the first performance of the piece for over 50 years, with the Â鶹Éç Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Clark Rundell and Prakriti Dutta singing the stunningly beautiful rags on which the piece is based.
