It is a century since the British and French Mandates in the Middle East formally began. In this new series for 麻豆社 Radio 4 marking that anniversary, Tom Bateman draws on his years as a 麻豆社 Correspondent based in Jerusalem to examine this critical period in the region鈥檚 history 鈥 a period when decisions taken by the two European nations shaped so much of what we see today. From institutions and movements of people to ideas and lines on maps, Britain鈥檚 role was foundational, yet little understood in Britain today. In this first episode Tom looks at the 1920s, and the consequences of Britain鈥檚 and France鈥檚 efforts to divide and rule. Producer: Giles Edwards.
