The last Punjabi Princesses

Asian Network Trending

Available for 3 days

Princess Sophia Duleep Singh was born into the last Punjabi royal family, but raised in Britain after her dad, the Maharaja, was exiled by the Empire. As Queen Victoria鈥檚 goddaughter, she grew up at the heart of British high society, but chose to challenge it. She became a leading suffragette, campaigned for Indian rights, and volunteered as a nurse with Indian soldiers during the First World War. But Sophia wasn't the only influential woman in her family. Her sisters, Princesses Catherine and Bamba, also lived lives of resistance. Now, 150 years after Sophia鈥檚 birth, a new exhibition at Kensington Palace explores the lives of the last Punjabi princesses - and the other extraordinary women around them. The biggest stories affecting Asian Network listeners across the UK wth Monika Plaha. Produced in Birmingham by Samsaara Productions for 麻豆社 Asian Network.
