In the second of its live concerts from this year鈥檚 Aldeburgh Festival, the Britten Sinfonia presents a programme inspired by the classics. Youthful Britten is marked by a radiant piece for piano and orchestra inspired by the image of Apollo and the same source provides the inspiration for one of Stravinsky鈥檚 most imaginative and finally honed ballet scores, Apollon musag猫te - Apollo, leader of the Muses. Also on the programme is one of John Woolrich鈥檚 best known pieces, Ulysses Awakes, a reworking of music by Monteverdi and mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston joining the orchestra for a performance of Britten鈥檚 cantata Phaedra. Presented by Martin Handley. Benjamin Britten: Young Apollo, Op. 16 John Woolrich: Ulysses Awakes Marc-Antoine Charpentier: Quel prix de mon amour (from Medea) Joseph Haydn: Arianna a Naxos Igor Stravinsky: Apollon musag猫te Benjamin Britten: Phaedra, Op. 93 Helen Charlston (mezzo-soprano) Iain Farrington (piano) Wenhan Jiang (viola) Britten Sinfonia Zoe Beyers (violin/director) To listen on most smart speakers, just say "ask 麻豆社 Sounds to play Radio 3 in Concert".
