In 1993 Sandra Gregory was imprisoned in Bangkok jail for attempting to smuggle heroin out of Thailand. She faced the death penalty. But looking back over the intense media coverage from the time she says knowing that the world was watching her trial was worse. Humphrey Hawksley was a 麻豆社 correspondent covering South East Asia and China at the time and reported on Gregory's case. Speaking to Archive on 4 he says Sandra's personal plight had a media appeal that eclipsed all other news at the time.
