Speaking the language

Kaval Vaseer

Available for over a year

You must speak English, if you want to be fully British. That's the message from Communities Minister Eric Pickles speaking recently at an 'Integration In 2013' event. The Conservative MP told an invited audience that people should be able to understand each other, and speak good English. He announced that, in future, instead of putting money into translation services, he would fund projects that help people to learn the language. In this extract some of the audience give their reaction to the speech, the plans to stop funding for translation services, and getting people to speak English... This was broadcast on 麻豆社 Radio Nottingham's Dhamaka programme. To hear extracts from Eric Pickles speech go to www.bbc.co.uk/desidownload
